Biography
Julia Jäkel, born in 1971, studied history, political science and economics at Heidelberg, Harvard and Cambridge. She attended graduate courses in history at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS Harvard), before completing a Cambridge M.Phil. in International Relations. Jäkel began her professional career in 1997 when she joined Bertelsmann’s central trainee program—a program that, only one year later, was to lead her to Gruner + Jahr.
By the late 1990s, Jäkel had become part of the “Financial Times Deutschland” founding team and, in 2004, was appointed head of publishing at “BRIGITTE” magazine group. Her next role, assumed in 2008, was of publishing director for over 20 magazines and digital platforms.
In 2013, she was installed as the company’s CEO. Together with her team, she has made it her mission to turn Gruner + Jahr into one of the most modern and creative publishing companies in the fast-changing media sector.
Julia Jäkel has been awarded the titles of “2016 Media Manager of the Year” (Kress) and “2017 Media Woman of the Year” (Horizont). In 2018, she was additionally distinguished as “Media Personality of the Year (W&V).
Julia Jäkel is a member of Bertelsmann’s Group Management Committee and Chair of the Bertelsmann Content Alliance, the organization the Group created to coordinate all of its German TV, TV production, radio, literary, music, and magazine content.
